ARCnet Agent

A network contains more than routers. It may include modems and other devicesSmart home and devicesSpeakers, lights, appliances and home servers. Explore planned scenarios for your network. that do not run ARCnet Gateway. ARCnet Agent is being developed to connect compatible resources of this kind. Its purpose is to bring a particular device's capabilities into the platform's common tools, giving it a clear place in the owner's infrastructure.

Different equipment, shared infrastructure

Routers, modems and other devicesSmart home and devicesSpeakers, lights, appliances and home servers. Explore planned scenarios for your network. have different jobs. They do not have to use the same operating system or management interface. Agent is intended as a component for supported equipment, helping make its capabilities part of the wider network without treating all devices as interchangeable.

Support depends on the model

An agent's capabilities depend on what a particular device and its software allow. Support therefore needs to be described by model and revision, rather than promised for every modem. A matching connector or similar product name does not establish that an agent can be installed and used.

What this means for an owner

If a separate modem provides part of a connection, its owner needs to understand its place in the network, while the person maintaining it needs to account for the equipment's characteristics. ARCnet integration should make working with a supported device a consistent part of managing infrastructure, rather than a separate task remembered only when something fails.

How Agent complements the platform

Gateway organises the network on a compatible OpenWrt device. Connect provides a phone interface, while Identity supplies the basis for trust and access. Agent extends the range of equipment that can participate. The connections and actions available will be documented separately for each supported implementation.

From selection to connection

Each public Agent implementation is intended to include details of tested models, available functions and installation procedures. Start with that information: it will help you understand how to use equipment you already own and what connecting it requires. Additional device types can be added after individual implementations are verified.
